Buying a stock....

I've been reading some threads and I cannot seem to find how you ACTUALLY go about buying one...Is it as simple as going online, using a checking/debit card and purchasing the amount of stock(s) you want to buy?

Also, how do I know how much the stock costs? How do I know if it went down or up (is it weekly or daily?) I'd like to buy some stock, but don't feel like going through my parents to do so. I'd like to invest $200-300 (which wouldnt yield a huge income, but might give back something) to start off. Is there a main website for all the purchasing and checking of the stocks? Thanks!

I suggest finding a stock broker. On that note, I also suggest staying the hell away from Scottrade. I had a Scottrade account and I was absolutely horrified at how idiotic those people were. I took my money and ran as soon as possible.

It is simple, cost effective, but it doesnt offer any research so you have to do that on your own.
It costs $4 per trade.
