I've done plenty of my own research and the vast majority of it does not conclude that viruses are alive

Fine.

This is from about 17 seconds of a google search for "virus alive". You obviously have done NO research and are going off of what you were told during a discussion at one juncture in your life.

Terms like 'plent of ... research' and 'vast majority' lead to believe things about you that are clearly false.

thats usually why most scientists don't classify viruses as living organisms.

I have done two interships on genetic engineering at Cornell and 3 summers volunteering at Roswell park.

I have a pretty clear idea of what I am doing, and only used those ambiguous terms because last time I tried to be concise I ended up arguing biology for 3 pages with a 13 year old.

A prion can be "killed" by heat or chemical. Does that make it alive?

The major consensus is that viruses are not alive

If you don't think life can be electronic, look into a prgram called Avida. Technically, it's an "auto-adaptive genetic system designed primarily for use as a platform in Digital or Artificial Life research. In lay terms, Avida is a digital world in which self-replicating computer programs mutate and evolve."

You can download it at: http://devolab.cse.msu.edu/software/avida/

Pretty interesting actually.
