You'll need more than a warrant....

to search a congressmans office.

So we've been hearing all about republican scandals for months and months, and finally, a democrat gets caught with his pants down. I mean he really got nailed:

Quote:
US Representative William Jefferson, the subject of a 14-month bribery investigation, was videotaped accepting $100,000 in $100 bills from a Virginia investor who was wearing an FBI wire, according to an affidavit released yesterday.

A few days later, on Aug. 3, 2005, FBI agents raided the Louisiana Democrat's home in Washington and found $90,000 of the cash in the freezer, the document said. The cash, in $10,000 increments, was wrapped in aluminum foil and stuffed in frozen food containers, it said.
And what do the Republicans do?

Quote:
There's nothing like the seizure of records from a congressional office to unite our usually battling members of Congress in bipartisan outrage.

President Bush on Thursday night ordered that records taken by the FBI from the office of Rep. William Jefferson, a Louisiana Democrat, be sealed for 45 days. Jefferson is under investigation by the Justice Department for allegedly accepting bribes.

Speaker of the House Dennis Hastert, an Illinois Republican, had strongly objected to an executive branch search of a congressional office — even if it was that of a Democrat. Hastert also raised suspicions that the Justice Department in retaliation leaked information to ABC News that he was involved in the Jack Abramoff investigation. Lawyers for the Justice Department have denied the news report.

House Minority Leader Nancy Pelosi, a California Democrat, agreed with Hastert that the search was improper — and so do both of Iowa's senators, Democrat Tom Harkin and Republican Charles Grassley.

"This congressman's corruption charges are serious and troubling, and this needs to be investigated thoroughly," said Harkin. But he said that the Jefferson papers were "unconstitutionally seized" by the executive branch and that a "gross violation" of the separation of powers occurred.

"He's not guilty yet, we don't know," said Harkin. "What if down the road you have more and more power going to the executive branch, if the president doesn't like what some Congress is doing, they investigate you and come in and seize your records?"

Grassley, who's had many run-ins with the FBI through his oversight as a member of the Judiciary Committee, said "it's a violation of separation of powers" and there were other ways to obtain the information through cooperation with investigating congressional committees.
Wonder what they're hiding? Must be a lot considering this was their chance to push the scandal stories over to the other side of the aisle so close to mid-term elections.

I am really liking the bipartisanship on this issue despite the corruption.

I agree. I'm intrigued by what they could be hiding. I think it could be a major scandal. As you pointed out, why would a republican support this... when they could easily take the advantage into the elections...?

It'll be interesting to see how this plays out.

While I'd certainly be interested in seeing paper shredder sales in DC this month, a lot of this could be hubris. Kind of a Cynthia Mckinney mindset: "I'm a congresswoman, how dare you try and put me through a metal detector!"

Not sure which ones worse.

Maybe there's more to it than just one Rep, and some guy from Africa. Maybe we'll discover all the corruption in Washington. Damn, there I go again, wishful thinking.

The people that take those polls aren't the best test subjects either.

Probably more of a margin of error of +/- 10%

Not the most scientific, but revealing nonetheless. The point being his base is unhappy.

I do agree with a +/- 10 margin of error.

I suspect it was done to keep this whole issue on the back burner, and to have a little something for a rainy day, which is coming fairly soon with mid term elections right around the corner. I wouldn't read anything more into it then as long as it's sealed, it's festering and can be brought into the light when needed?
