Playing for 11 years
Owned every marker, ever (well, just about)

I was very excited when this marker came out and I bought one almost instantly. Unfortunately, I noticed that in order for Smart Parts to make the marker so cheap, they cut corners in materials and quality.

Uses Impulse barrel threads. I think they just wanted to get rid of all of their left over Imp barrels. Should be universal threading (aka Cocker threads), as most guns are now-a-days.

Very cheap aluminum. To the best of my knowledge, they found the cheaper aluminum possible and extruded it into a body. To cover up this fact(I don't really know for sure), they slid a plastic cover over it.

Very unreliable. Due to the quality of the parts, the reliability of the marker suffers. Tolerances are too high, which causes jams, shredded orings, etc. Theading for the microline fitting stripped when I thumb-tightened a QEV on it.

Bad grips, hard to press on/off button.

The one good thing is that it offers electropnuematic performance for new players. However, those who do not know there way around a paintball gun will probably run into a lot of difficulties.

You can drop money on these like mad, but they will never perform as well as a high end, and will not resell. They'll be much better than stock, but not as good as say, a Mini, Promaster, older high-end, etc.

I bought mine the first week they came out, and sold it 3 weeks later after running into a slew of problems. I'll probably get a lot of negative ratings on this review, but this is just the way I see it.

ok ive been paintballing for almost 10 years and stopped for a while but when all my friends started getting into paintballing, i decided to buy another gun. i started with a 98 custom then found a good deal for an ion on ebay so i went for it and have no regrets. when i bought it, it already had a virtue board, CP reg. clamping feedneck, virtue eyes, virtue EZ on/off, and a SP linear barrel and i only pait 200 for all this. so then i went on to buy a SP drop and on/off asa, CP rake trigger, L7 bolt, Kila magnetic detents, and QEV. then i custom shaved my stock body.now the marker shoots like a $1000 marker. with all the upgrades and my halo B i can shoot ropes like no tomorrow.next im going to grab a TechT sleeper body, new designz firing can and breech, some virtue grips, and a redz pepperstick 14" barrel. all in all i think i spent 300 on the whole marker including the gun its self and the upgrades(upgrades were bought on PBnation) i would recommend the ion to anyone looking for a cheap, reliable, light, air efficient gun. you WILL need alot of upgrades to make it worth it though!

Cons: design(read review)
To start this gun is one of the cheapest "pro guns" you can buy so don't expect the best gun in the world before buying this. That said this thing is really a nice gun stock. It can shoot up to 17 bps and it has good eyes and a decent bolt. This thing can be upgraded so much and so easily that it can become a very good gun with less than 200 more into it. I put a new board, qev, and bolt in it. Now it will max out a haloB (at 22 +/- BPS) easily. The cosmetic upgrades for this are nice to because you can make this thing look like whatever you want it to look like. The only bad thing i have to say about it is that it takes a while to take apart so if i got one today i would probably go with an xe instead of the original. you do get pretty fast at takin it apart but you just can't beat a bolt out the back design.

Pros: Good Beginner Gun
Cons: Almost Everything Else
I have owned this gun for lil over a year and now upgraded to a different gun. First, the accuracy kills me. The Ion can shoot fast, but shooting fast would make the first ball accurate but then the velocity drops off the following balls. Secondly, I don't care for the look of the gun. Thirdly, this gun consumes soooo much air.

Pros: price, performance,
Cons: heavy, need basic upgrades
Ok, so lets say you want to go in a tourny and you are shooting an Ion, it shoots 17 bps max and rules are allowing only 15 and now they are even down to 12 or even 10 bps for 09 season, What tha FXXXX do you need to shoot 30 bps with a Apeboard or 20+ with any other virtue or tadeo, I personally donīt understand that upgrade when you can focus on changing, Feedneck(Q), trigger(your personal choice), barrel(freak Jr and Dye are good choice but again this is personal ), bolt (L7, Deadlywind,Boblong) QEV(360 a must), ASA (your choice but its amust), that will cost at least another 200$ and for that price you are already close to a Proto SLG 09 or PMR 08-09 or EOS.
CONS, even after the upgrades, weight, the gun is kind of heavy for a speedball marker.
I honestly have at least 10 cases of paint and the only chop came from a stupid ball that break in the loader (or even the pod), so I could say, less that a hand of fingers for all my choped paint.

All and all, the marker is good, basic upgrades are necessary but it will take you to the game with a decent, very good performance.

Ps, once 360 QEV installed, the Dwell will drop dramatially given you very, very good Air optimization.

ok well to start, i got this gun this december (12-??-07) and i have to say we got a great deal for what we paid (200, came with a few upgrades and a halo b).

the problems i have had with it are a few leaks that i easily fixed, and the fire bolt i have in it keeps chopping, other than that the gun is great.

another small thing that bugs me to death is that it is a pain to strip, but once you get it down its very easy.

i never had the gun fully stock since we got it on ebay, so i cant really say anyhting about the gun stock. but anyways good luck with this gun hope you enjoy it

These are good little starter guns, but I'd advise you buy either a used one with upgrades or a Ion Max'd or something. The stock parts are terrible. The feedneck has weak threads and isn't clamping/twist lock, the trigger is plastic and very crappy, and the duckbill asa is a pain. Once you get past those stock parts the gun is decent. There are a rediculous amount of cosmetic and performance upgrades, and the gun actually performs pretty well. The board however is garbage. I see more broken Ion boards than anything else on the gun. The wires are extremely easy to rip off, the noid is attatched so if you blow it you need to buy a new board, and the frame pulls on the board and wires when you take it out. Be very careful with it, I've had to replace a couple. I reccomend a QEV, CP trigger, hybrid headlock feed, and a CP on/off for this marker. After that its fine.
