So basically the Smart Parts Ion has revolutionized the paintball community. Never before has a marker given so much performance, for such a low price. This marker allows many people to break into the sport, and has ultimately led to growth all over the paintball community.

Let's start this off.

When you first get the ion stock, it is ok. It's obviously not the best out of the box, but it can hold it's own and allows you to play with the big boys on the field. What really set's this marker apart from many others though, is the upgrades that you can purchase. You can build an ion with not a single smartparts part if you want. This vast range of customization is what brings many to love this marker. You can achieve the performance of many higher end markers with the ion, given that you are willing to spend quite a bit of money on it. (I'm talking 600 dollars for the really expensive brand new stuff.)

There are so many parts out there for the ion, that it is hard to actually make your ion not be unique. Be it aesthetics or pure fire power, the ion will not disappoint.

Now, if you were to purchase an ion, and go to a field and play, more mature players will treat you with respect. You'll have to keep in mind that many people do not like the Ion or Smart Parts. Should this keep you from purchasing this marker? No way! The Ion is amazing, and it feels good to shoot people with your lower end marker when they spent 1,200 on a high end marker.

Keep in mind, it's not the gun that makes the player.

The only draw back to the marker would probably be taking it apart, although I think it is a plus. To get access to the bolt, which you should do after every day of play to lube, you must dismantle the whole marker. While this could be tedious at first, I feel that it is important, especially for a beginner, to understand the way his marker works. What better way to do that than to take apart your marker and have to put it back together again? You'll learn the part names, and what they do, and overall is a really good learning experience.

If you get an Ion, and treat it right, it will never let you down.

Pros: good if u are a beginner speedballer.
Cons: Have to open grips to get to the board
Been using the Ion for a while and hasent let me down yet. I play on a young guns speedball team and even though we use Egos and NXT Shocker that are totaly upgraded if it is wet dont ever use our best gun if it is electric. The feedneck is the first thing you should get if you have an electric loader. Right after I got my Ion one of my team mates that has an Invert Mini gave me a new HALO (which is way better than the one I use to use) and I still had to sand the feedneck for ever until it fit. The Ion is great if you cant chose a color you want to stay with for 15 bucks you can get a body kit and they are awsome looking. Over all the Ion is great if you are a beginning speedballer but if u are already decent than I reccomend an Ego or ETEK (personal choice, friends like NXT's). Great buy.

Pros: very good, nice lookin (ion XE).
Cons: feedneck,trigger,duck asa,barrel,reg,board
If you by an ion you need to get alot of upgrades the marker is good if your a noob but once you get out on the feild your not gonna keep up so some things you should get. a barrel the 12 in that comes with it is crap you would have to be a front player. the trigger, piece of crap the plastic trigger makes the distance from the board so much harder to shot. the Asa if you want a nice lookin ion you need to get rid of the Asa it ugly. The reg on the ion sucks CP makes better for cheap i got mine for $20. for every gun i would like to say GET A CLAMPING FEED NECK the ones with the o rings suck. I got the ape board 40 bps on reactive. the normal stock board only does 17 bps no way u can roll in tournaments with 17 so blackheart and virtue are the same just different names the ape board is the way to go. ions need alot of work but once you got it the gun is rockin like a thousand dollar gun so all togher i payed 700 for all m upgrades all bought on www.ansgear.com

Pros: reliable, easy to maintain, price
Cons: have to upgrade it to reach max potential
I know everyone hates on the ion but i personally dont see why. I have had this gun for two years and the ONLY problem i have ever had is the board fried but thats because im the third owner of it so its not to new. Anyways this gun is amazing for the price. Plus with all the upgrades you can do to it you will be able to create a gun thats truly yours . As far as breaks go i've only had maybe 10 max but thats because of the really crappy field paint. Since i bought this gun ive only dumped around 150 into it and it shoots smoother and quiter then my friends ego. Some of the cons are that it doesnt come with a clamping feedneck , on/off asa, and those are pretty much my only cons.

Overall buy one. you won't be disappointed.

Cons: Needs upgrades
****This review is after I have upgraded my ion.****

Recommend:

Let me start by saying that a stock ion is not a pretty thing. I highly recommend upgrading the board and barrel.

My ion has a Virtue Board and a Freak Kit and is accurate and fast. Almost everything can be tuned easily without having to open the grip frame like you would have to with the stock board.

Reliability/Maintenance:

Maintenance is not the easiest thing in the world. Unless you get an aftermarket body kit, there is no bolt out back and you have to remove a bunch of screws to get to the bolt. However, if you maintain your gun correctly, like any gun, it will return the favor on the field.

Performance:

There is almost no kick when tuned properly. The ion is very light, but not all people will like that it feels very plastic-y. Some say it feels like a toy. Efficiency, when tuned properly, is amazing.

Upgrades:

Almost everything on an ion can (and should) be upgraded. This means long streams of paint are easily attainable with your choice of trigger and other upgrades. The stock feedneck is not clamping and may be aggravating for beginners.

Summary:

People say save your money and buy a better gun, but how do you play when all your money is being saved? An ion is an affordable entry level speedball gun that you can upgrade over time to compete with other guns.

Overall:

Stock: 5/10

Upgraded: 7.5/10

I bought my Ion stock and brand new. I have added many upgrades to improve the performance, and it currently performs well. It can be a money pit at times, but it can also can be a life saver for the people that can't afford the 1000 dollar guns. (egos, dms, marqs, ect.) They look nice, worth the money and you can get away with them in speedball courses.

ok. so the ion. what can i say.
all around probably the best beginner gun that u can buy right now on the market. at first its not very reliable. when i got my gun the board didint work. but costumer service these days is amazing. so i got that fixed for free. the very first MANDATORY upgrade u need is a clamping feed neck. i cant harp on this enough. just go spend 30 bucks on a clamping feed neck. it will save u A LOT of trouble. trust me. if ur looking just to play for fun a couple a time a year this is the best gun u can get. If ur looking to up this gun i reccomend buying a new trigger, barrel, and whatever else u would like. this gun is not very reliable at first. the first thing i would do when u get the gun is go into your local shop and tell them to give it a tune up. this will really help ur gun preform better, and be more reliable so it doesnt leak when u go to play at the feild. if ur looking to spend a little more money on a gun i reccomed the invert mini, or dangerous power g3.

ok, i bought my ion used off here for 90 bucks. great price and all, since it came pre-upped. some things i reccommend upgrading is the feedneck, trigger, barrel, and thats just to start off. i have a CCM feedneck, dye hyper2 reg, unitech barrel, redz body kit and grips, SP 1/4 turn on/off with CP rail. i ended up losing the spring to my CP sling trigger, so i had to put the stock one back on.

if you don't mind putting about 200-300 bucks worth of ups on a marker, then this is for you, otherwise, i would look for something else
