I bought my Ion back in 05 right after they where released. In all honesty, it has never broken down, and has seen a good 2 full years or use. It shoots smooth, fast and accurate. It's great on air and has been a pleasure to own. I don't understand why people hate on it so much, for the price there is nothing better. Considering used ones go for roughly $100, if you are on a budget, or just want a great gun for cheap so you can buy more equipment, I would strongly suggest the Ion.

Much love for my Ion

Pros: Reliable, keeps up with high end guns.
Cons: People's views on them because of kids who act BA.
This gun is VERY good for it's price. I would recommend it to any player who wants to get into the Speedball or even the Woodsball scene. It has a lot of upgrades and can shoot like a High End with the proper upgrades. The only thing that I would say is bad about this gun is the rep that people give it because of kids who are starting and buy an Ion and act like they're pro/the best at the sport.

This gun is a piece of ****. I never wanted this at all but money was a problem so this was the way to go. when i first got it, it worked fine except the feedneck sucked, its a gas hog, low bps, and the on/off button. When i took it to the field, i used some high quality dxs hellfire and the gun kept chopping with the eyes on. So I took it home and decided to open it up and maintain it. it took about an hour at least to get to the firing can and bolt. I lubed it and played again another day. The fps was really low to shoot the paint and turned the reg screw all the way up. Still wont shoot. I gave up and threw this piece of crap in the close and haven't touched it since. I now use an 05 freestyle since 06 and its been great.

its gay, dont get it, your better off with an slg.

**** smart parts (except for shockers)

ok i bought an ion last summer and i cant say i have been too happy with it... i have paid more shipping it back and forth to the factory and getting it fixed then i have on the marker and all of the upgrades... it shot ok when it worked but it seems every time i shot it something else would go wrong and id have to ship it back... i tried buying upgrades but that did not really help... i hated this gun and i do not recomend it to anyone...

in fact pm me if you want a list of guns that you can get for $200 or less that are much nicer and user freindly than an ion!!!

Cons: Plastic body, needs a few upgrades out of box
The Smart Parts Ion has been a great marker for the year and 2 months that I have used it. For such a low priced marker it definitley competes with the higher end market. Being able to shoot up to 17bps with stock board is great for any rec or beginning tournament players. It's shooting modes of Semi, Full Auto, and Rebound are all easily changed once inside the grip frame. Some people think that it's a hard marker to maintain and it always runs into trouble but that is totally incorrect -- Once you've stripped the marker down a few times and learned it's internals and how it functions then you'll easily be able to fix any problems that might have been making it malfunction. What sets the Ion apart from many other markers is the fact that it has hundreds of upgrades and you can build one without any stock parts. Also the Ion has interchangeable body kits so you can change the color of your marker at any time, but the downfall to this is that they're plastic and I'd much rather prefer metal.

I do recommend a few upgrades out the box though to up the Ion's overall performance:
Feedneck - A clamping feedneck is a must as the stock one only fits snuggly with a few loaders.
ASA - The way the stock ASA is positioned makes your tank stick out pretty far and it can be hard to snap shoot with a long setup.
Trigger - The stock trigger is magnetic and plastic. Personally I like the smoothness of an aluminum spring return trigger but that's personal preference.
Barrel - You'll upgrade this on most guns at one point or another but I just felt the Ion's barrel was shooting pretty inaccurate compared to most stock barrels.

All-in-all: Great marker for the price and I'd suggest it to anyone new players wanting something to keep up with highend markers.

Stock barrel is not the best ~ larger bore diameter and not a lot of porting makes it loud ~ but if you get the right paint it shoots fine. I upgraded my stock barrel in under a month to a freak kit.

QEV ~ get a qev for one ~ definitely helps it's efficency. Without one it's not the best in terms of # of shots ~ maybe 1400max out of a 68/4500.

Stock feedneck works, I guess, I bought a pro-clamp right away as to not have to deal with the stock.

I use my ion as my backup as I know it will always work.

The Review

The Smart Parts Ion was my first gat. The videos on Youtube convinced me enough to make the purchase.

On the first day of play with it I had a bad paint to barrel match. ( Reasons why I overbore). The bore of the stock barrel is .689 so any average sized paint with slight enlargement is a nasty barrel break. So I started the "Ion Experience" on a wobbly start. So a necessary upgrade is a barrel. Its also loud and doesnt even match the anno of the gun. (more on that later)

The feedneck is absolute trash. Its high above the body and doesnt clamp. So I ended up using electrical tape so prevent it from moving. So then you need to upgrade the feedneck.

The ASA I could care less about. Im not anal about having an on/off but when it acts as a "drop backward", I do get a little pissed. A 48 ci tank was a must because anything bigger and the balance is crap. (Please dont tell me to work out because I play high school linebacker and working out is necessary). So a new ASA is necessary.

The trigger when tweaked for about half and hour will actually give you some decent walking on semi. You really just need to take the time to sit down and tweak it for a while. If It had been metal I would have no complaints other than the index finger pull is a harder pull than your middle finger. So for many a new trigger is needed.

The gun in my hands is pretty comfortable. I dont mind the meaty grips. Some absolutly hate it so you just need to go and try it. (Or dont buy the gun at all.)

The body isnt BOB so it can be a little annoying to maintnence but as a first gun I think everyone needs to figure out whats behind the anno lol. The hoses are fragile so you have to be very careful.

Now my sob story. lol

I bought it at actionvillage.com for a great price and was pretty excited.

Sadly it was tainted with horrible consistency so that was a pain. When I realized the only solution was the reg. I went to clean it when I realized the the reg. safety screw was rounded off. Yeah thats the gayest thing to have when you buy a gun brand new.

The guns color doesent even match. The barrel looks purple up close. The body is actually colored gloss black. Then the frame is a dusted textured black. It looks like crap.

Overall

Just dont waste your time with the gun.

I started paintballing with this gun and I had more stress than fun with it. Its now sold thank goodness. You will end up spending an extra $170 TO $500 on upgrades. Yes, 500 if you want them to be like some of the gats here on the nation. With that kind of money you have enough to buy a dangerous power g3 or a Bob Long Protege. Even if you up it itll still be that Ion that can die on command.

Thanks for reading

Please dont waste your time like I did.

Just get an SLG lol

Hello,

I have had my Smart Parts Ion for around 2 years now. When I first bought this gun it was like any other low end marker. I put around $300, and now its a monster!! This gun ripps, and is just like any other high end gun. I recently put a new body kit on it, and it looks amazing. This gun is so good because its light, durable, easy to clean, and has so many avaliable upgrades. Anything on this gun can be upgraded to suit you. Although this gun might now be good stock, with a couple hundred, and some good tuning this gun will be like any other high end gun.

Overall I give this gun a A++, ligh, super upgradeable, and just wonderful gun.
