My first Dm, it shot so well. I'll copy a little explanation as to why I like DM's so much, and it literally started with this gun. Definitely very smooth and shoots very well. I'd say just spend the extra money now and get a newer one that's lighter and more efficient.
I love DM's, and this may come across a little biased, but they just seem to be the perfect gun for me. They have always been super smooth when properly tuned, and I have always been able to get enough pods off of a 68/45 with them (anywhere from 6-9 pods).
I prefer them over the NTs because of the ability to adjust the LPR to either set the gun up to run superrr smoooothly or to run a little more efficiently. I personally have not seen an issue that couldn't be fixed by cleaning the gun (and replacing an oring). I've owned over 35 DM's and have NEVER had to replace a solenoid, all the heresay about blowing solenoids is crap. I would recommend these guns to anyone and everyone as they are going cheap on the used market and all shoot like a dream.

Dye Precision Dye Matrix 4 (DM4)I picked up my DM4 in 07 and it served decently as a backup gun.
For $300-$400, you can pick up a DM6 nowadays, and I suggest that route.

i ha one of the first 5 dm4s made....and then i had 5 more haha. these were great guns for their time. very fast, very smooth, and very accurate. they can still hang with guns that are put out today, but they are heavy comparatively and not that efficient on air. if you can get one for around 200 i would say not to hesitate, it will be better then that ion you were eyeing.

This was my first high-end gun. Went from a $60 gun to a $1200 gun in less than 6 months. LOL. Was consistent. Was threatened to get mugged if I didn't get it out of some people's sight (they probably couldn't stand a noob having such a good gun). But, it was big, certainly by today's standards. Still, my first taste of paintball nirvana.

I've been shooting my DM4 for a little over two years now. I picked it up used here on the nation for a mere 400 dollars and it was worth every penny. This gun is one of the fastest markers I've ever owned while still maintaining a smooth action. The Hyper 2 and LPR do a great job keeping the chrono readings consistent. This thing will never go down as long as you keep the bolt lubed. It has never gone down on me and has seen extremely heavy use.
However, there are some downsides. The gun is a little heavy by modern standards, but nothing you can't work with. You can also expect spool valve efficiency. Once again not a major problem considering most places let you fill your airtank for free.
In conclusion, if you get a chance to get your hands on one of these tanks, do it. I have no intention of ever letting mine go considering how well its treated me.

I bought this marker a few weeks ago, and I got a great deal. Of course I did have to replace a few things (Eyes - a complete pain in the ***, Battery/micro switch harness). But now it works great. I really love this gun. And for the price ($225) it can't be beat. You could buy some new low-end guns, or other used mid-end guns, but this is by far your best bet. It is incredibly smooth and quiet, and I am willing to sacrifice efficiency for it.

This was the first high end I ever owned that I bought new while it was still popular, and I was not disappointed. It has everything a high end has to offer, with a very deep anodize, and very high quality parts.
Cons:
Fairly inefficient
Heavier than newer markers
Changing/Cleaning the Eyes sucks
Non-Lever Locking Feedneck
