Pros: Reliable & Powerful
Cons: None really
The Tippmann 98C Platinum is a veery good marker. I used it for a very long time and never had a problem with it. It rarely ever chopped or jammed and it was very reliable. It wasnt the most accurate but I used it mostly for CQC so its okay. It is extremely customizable. The 98C is a cheap gun and its a very good starting gun. I would recommend it to anyone wanting to get started playing paintball. The only upgrades that i would recommend getting are a longer barrel and maybe a stock. My first gun was a 98C Platinum and I still use it some today instead of my US Army Project Salvo. If you purchase this marker you will be impressed by its reliability and performance. You won't feel the need to upgrade for a while. In conclusion, I feel like the 98 is the best beginners gun in the market.

Tippmann Sports 98 Custom Platinum Series For the guy who reaks out a marker 4 or 5 times a year, this is the marker for them. That is why it is the best mechanical rental marker out there.

Pros: most reliable marker on the market
Cons: expensive to upgrade
- Tippmann is without a doubt the most reliable company in the game -

Overall appearance - Very basic and bland, but its good for what the marker is used for, typically for rental and beginners.

Performance - shoot great and occasionally chop, but really a great marker.

Reliability - Still in use today and will be in use for as long as the sport exists.

Value - Tippmann is basically what people think of when they hear paintball. People who don't play on a regular basis see paintball as a scenario game that reenacts war. Though people who play it often know that isn't true now a days, it is still predominantly seen as a woodsball game. It is the paintball name brand.

Pros: It's a Tippmann.
Cons: It's a Tippmann.
Tippmann is about tradition. They find an idea and stay with it. For them to come out with a "new" and "improved" version of one of their markers is quite a step.

The basic Platinum comes in a typical Tippmann box with the bag of goodies (orings, tools, squeegie (a real pull thru) and barrel cover) and a 200 (180) round hopper. The stock barrel is tucked in below the gun. It's just like the old 98C barrel minus a few porting holes and comes with a new dust finish - eight inches in length - truly the only barrel this rugged little rec gun would ever need. (By typical Tippmann box I mean you will be picking very ungreen styrofoam paricals out of cracks and crevices for days. Once I had a 98C that would not feed new out of the box. Yup. Styrofoam)

The main body appearance is once again, Tippmann. Rugged. Tough. The dust coat black finish looks "thicker" than the old 98C if you can imagine that.

Other then the (removable) Picatinny rail and the ring on the back for harness straps it's a 98C. In fact it says 98 Custom on the side with no reference to Platinum. Most of the improvements are inside the gun where, hopefully you will never have to go, on purpose or otherwise. For the ease of techs and those that just have to see what's inside the new split shell allows you to remove one half of the back side for easy access to everything.

No longer will I put a 98C back together only to discover the sight pin spring or ball latch (detent) laying on the work bench.

I thought I read somewhere that the front grip was going to be different with maybe a rubber coating or new texture but it's the same old plastic foregrip. It cocks the same way, the safety is the same, the internal valve workings are the same, the swing down feed neck is the same and the velocity screw is on the typical 98 side. On the other side there is TWO access holes (plugged with screw plugs) so you can hookup the RT mod and cyclone hopper independently from each other. Missing from this side is the two screws that held the power tube and valve in place. Yeah, no more stripped aluminum valve bodys.

The only thing I expected to be bad was the new way the braided hose attaches to the valve. I pictured some TAC-5 nightmare with an oring going bad every two days but Tippmann managed to do it with out an oring. With the split shell removed (5 hex head screws) and a few quick turns with a 7/16 inch wrench the hose is loose and the bolt, power tube/valve, linkage arm and rear bolt slides right out. Time will tell how leak proof this connection will stay.

Do your tech and yourself a favor by not taking it apart. A quick wipe down (or even a hose down) and few drops of paintball gun oil down the ASA everytime you air up should keep the Platinum going forever.

I can't be certain but it looks like the Platinum will take all the typical 98C after market parts - stock, double trigger, Flatline, APEX and of course with the Picatinny there are even more possibilities now for that mil-sim look.

When asked about cons above I put "It's a Tippmann" with a bit of tongue in cheek. It's not a light weight. The Platinum is no different than a 98C. When you fire it it's loud and tends to shake rattle and roll. It does come with the Anti Chop Technology (ACT) but still, it's not going to win you any major tournaments - sorry, not even with the RT, Cyclone or electric trigger. But if you just want to knock around and have fun and not have to waste time tuning and timing and changing batteries any Tippmann is the way to go.

(And for the record: I am not an employee or in any other way affiliated with Tippmann. I do, however, expect to sell a bunch of these puppies!)

Oh and by the way PBN... why are all mechanical markers considered "LOW END"!??

Its safe to say that the 98 is a really awesome gun whether your a newbie or a pro. It handles well and rarely needs maitenence unless you wanna oil up your gun. Sad thing is no matter how many times Tippmann updates it, its always gonna be the same set up. However, I HIGHLY recommend this gun if your starting out or you just wanna see how a mech gun works for you. This is the perfect gun for you.

Pros: Rugged, reliable, great starter gun
Cons: Heavy
Reliability, great customer service and an affordable price make this a great gun form someone just getting their feet wet in the sport. This gun will take any and all abuse and still work the next day. Its all metal body construction can be seen as a pro and a con. It allows for its durability but at a heavy cost. For those playing scenario games (8+ hours), lugging this bad boy around can wear your arms out over a long period of time. May not seem heavy at first, but it does wear on you. A gun sling would definately be a consideration, especially for younger players. Overall a great gun for starters in the sport that aren't willing to shell out alot of cash right out of the gate.

So the 98 has been around forever and is really associated with woodsball,
A lot of fields use them as rental guns. One thing I can say is that almost no matter what you do to it, it won't break. On the other hand I have never really like the short barrel always stemmed that I was having to exaggerate lobbing shots across the way, they're ugly. Price is a great thing though if you are looking to get into paintball just for fun, anything other than fun though and it really won't cut it.
