A tippman 98 is likely the first gun most people played paintball with so there is an endearing factor to it. It's usually their first gun because its built like a tank and can handle the rigors of neglectful ownership and still perform ok. The gun is also extremely customizable having possibly the largest aftermarket parts selection of any gun.

My 1st pb gun was a used Tippmann 98 Custom. Got it for $80 with 4 CO2 tanks and 2 masks. (LOVE craigslist!)
Some ppl say it's a little heay, but that's because it's not tiny and plastic. (Try carrying a REAL gun around all day, and the 98C is a LIGHTWEIGHT!
Other ppl complain that it's old technology and it hasn't changed much since the original 98, but it just plain WORKS! Don't mess with it if it ain't broke! (The m-16 has been with us since the 60s, and we still use the m-4 carbine, and how about the Browning M2 .50 cal machine gun?)
Conclusion... not the fastest, or lightest, or cheapest, but one of the ALL TIME BEST!

This is my very first marker and I am extremely happy about it. It shoots great no matter what you do to it. I got it for a good price for a pre owned marker. Only cons for me is that you might accidentally sink in a bunch of money on upgrades instead of just buying a better gun. Great beginner gun.
