I bought this gun awhile ago when it came out and its been shooting real great. Ive had a dark intimidator which would sometimes shoot kindly and others not so great. This gun as long as the other current top of the line bob long markers are setting the standards and this was a well designed gun especially for price. I have other guns that i can use and this gun keeps up with my ego. I would shoot both great gun on the manufactures part.

Pros: Air efficient, light weight, easy to clean, reliab
Cons: limited color choices
I bought my Protege whey they first started selling at World Cup this past year. I was very happy to see that Bob started to include an ASA (non on/off but still nice), macroline and an oring kit with these new guns. Before new timmy owners would have to buy all of those things separately. At first glance it may look plain but sometimes simplicity is a good thing. I chose the all black version because I think it looks the best, although they are available in red, blue and clear; all with black accents at this time.

On the field I get very good air efficiency and off the field it's as easy to work on and clean as previous timmy models.

For the price of $550 you get a very capable gun that is ready to shoot at any level tournament, whether it be PSP, NPPL or local events. The board allows you to set the ROF and whether it ramps or not so you can follow the rules too.

If you choose to upgrade the gun later on there are several options from Bob (pillow bolt, triggers, etc) or from other companies like Tadao for a new board.

Overall this is a great gun for a great price.

Price paid: $475.00
Pros: Light, fast, comfortable.
Cons: Stock trigger, stock asa, stock barrel
I purchased my protege going from an ego7.
I had shot the gun previously just from other people at my local field who had one an i was impressed.
When i got my at the same time 2 other team-mates got theirs i was surprised how different they were setup right from the factory. Not a big problem but the trigger still takes some getting used to, I would highly recommend getting another trigger.
The stock barrel is the same assassins barrel they have been using since the original alias intimidators and it still hasn't got any better.

The rest of the gun is great though, very fast and accurate with the right barrel (ccm or ultralight are best imo), its also pretty efficient. Its comfortable to, the balance from the regulator to the frame seems well conceived.

In conclusion - Ide pick one up and dont regret getting mine, be prepared to spend another $75-100 on buying some upgrades to make it tip-top but even with that its a top of the line high-end for $600.

Cons: stock feedneck
Bought my protege at world cup, have put probably 20 cases through it since.

The marker gets ~2000 shots on one 68/45 fill, has very little recoil, low sound signature, weighs ~2lb (very light), and is super comfortable to hold. Mine is +-3 over the chrono with the stock reg.

Some complain about it not having an on off stock, but, I prefer a non on/off asa, as they are lighter and less prone to leak.

I do not like the stock twist neck feedneck and replaced mine with a lever clamping version before I ever used the marker.

The stock board isn't bad, not the easiest thing to fine tune, but, I see no real reason to replace it if you don't want to drop another $100 for no reason.

I see no reason for 4 eyes or a pillow bolt. I have shot case aupon case of very brittle chronic pro through my protege and have yet to break a ball.

This is definatley my marker of choice for the 08 season.

Cons: Appearance for some.
I must say that I loved this gun for the time I had it. I was getting insane efficiency (Hopper and 4 pods off 2700-2800 psi in my 45/45), while at the same time having ZERO kick. It was very easy to tune to my liking. The stock trigger is one of the best in the business (second to the Ego). And my whole setup was incredibly light. I never had an issue with leaks, and I would rarely break paint. But that goes for any marker. Feed it good paint, and it will give you good results.

I would definitely recommend this gun to anyone. I know the price is a little low for a high-end marker, but it can honestly compete with any other marker out there.

BTW: If you see a Protege in the BST with Disturbed Reaper Stinger grips, and a Trinity ASA, that is my old marker. It rips like none other.

Pros: Fast, not a lot of kick, Efficient, Light, Price
Cons: Milling! No on/off.
I bought a Protege in May of this year, and after 2 months, I traded it for a Rapper.

Don't get me wrong, I loved the way the Protege shot, as well as how light and efficient it was. There was light kick when shooting, as well as a remarkably quiet sound signature (I guess compared to Egos). I could shoot almost a case off a 68/4500, while everyone else would be going to get air after 2 games.

I basically got rid of the Protege for one reason: It was kind of ugly. The milling on the Protege was very unbecoming of a high end gun. In the future, I definitely would shoot a Vice; it's not as if I dislike gen 5 timmies.

This gun is well worth the money as it outperforms any guns in its price range, and can run well with any gun in the $700 market. That is, if you can stand the bland milling.

tl;dr
Amazing shooting gun, efficient, great value for the price. Only downside is the ugly milling.

Cons: Feedneck
Ok so i had, what i thought to be a tough decision, in between a g3 and protege. My teammate traded for a g3 and soon after i got a protege and all i can say is wow, glad that happened. The only thing a g3 has over a protege is the feedneck. When i got this thing i thought it would be your average mid grade gun, but i'd classify it as a high-end beast. I perfer it over any marq, and thats saying something, as im quite picky with guns. The only upgrades i recommend is a feedneck and possibly a pillow bolt though thats not a necessary upgrade. I got a tadao board, pillow bolt, and a barrel, and it shoots better than an 07 ego, all i can say is awesome job bob long.
