Do you have any idea of what could be used as netting that's reliable, affordable, and safe. I was thinking golf netting, but I'm looking for other ideas...does anybody else have any?

Paintball netting is rated to stop paintballs. I highly reccomend it. You can buy it multiple places online (or go to a field in your area and ask where they purchased it) and go from there. It's reliable, somewhat affordable, and very safe.

shade cloth 70% or better, will work and most insurence companies approve it if it comes from a reputable source

Insurance companies require netting that is in compliance with ASTM standards. You can either check with your insurance company (if you have one) or you can purchase the standards online from www.astm.org.
The applicable standards are:
F 2278-03 ... "Test method for evaluating paintball barrier netting"
F 2184-02 ... "Guide for installation of paintball barrier netting"

he may be wanting to set up a shooting net, that is what i would like to do, i live in a house with woods in my backyard, but soon i will be moving, and it will be a more crouded neighborhood. the netting i can drape over a clothing line or something then reuse the paintballs for target practice agian that fall onto the ground/netting tuck, like a ~4-7 piece

Has anyone ever used the ASTM standard for hanging paintball barriers? I paid the cost just to see what it was. It was the same heap of garbage system I had come up with on my own. It is very impracticle, unless your nets are hung in a vacume. Any wind or rain or snow will create movements, which will create tears, which means youll be out patching nets weekly in the first year and daily in the second year.
Furthermore, Dunamis, all paintball netting even the astm standard clearly say paintball netting will not stop all paintballs, it will only reduce the risk of a spectator getting hit.
If you want something that is garunteeded to work, find a Professional Engineer, sit down with them, explain the needs of the system, the physics of paintballs, and shooting them, and have them draw up a set of stamped blueprints.
all total, you'll be lucky if it can be done for $10/ linear foot (usd) including all materials and engineering costs.

^ Yes, but can you imagine the cost for most fields? It would be excellent at large tournies though.

The problem with using plexi is that after a while the paint will cause a haze or just blocking of spectator view in general with direct hits. Though a great way to get a way to hit well over 99% safety, upkeep will be a large factor (costs) and lowered spectators due to lower visability. Nets, even with direct hit ball breakage, still allow an acceptable amount of viewability and you don't have to go and wash the net down. You can stil lsee through it. Probably the best setup I've seen is for Ultimate Madness. They use a domed netting system with a metal railing on the floor. You need to lean in to the net to get anywhere close to taking a ball to the face. Once you cross the line, you will fall over into the net and get kicked out of the facility. Pretty impressive way to use the same materials but up the safety satandards.
