I am located in Northern VA not far from the Pev's at AG fields and I have played a lot of rec woods ball and I want to get into tourney style paintball.
I moved up or some of you may think down from a Automag that I have had for years to a Ion...I know (Flame suit on)...fact of the matter is I am 30 years old with two boys to feed...its all I can afford...I am very quick and agile as I play on a "A" level ice hockey so i am competitive which rec ball isnt.
I want to step up my game but it seems everyone has a team, there is always players trying to get on a team on here...and well, how do you get experience? I dont know enough people to form a team...
Help a n00b out with some 411

I may be a n00b but I can read...this is a question that is regionally based which is Virginia which is also in the Southeast...so not really...I wont get a good answer in the n00b forum, I will get a general go to a field and ask around answer as opposed to someone from the area that might know where to go and who to talk to...so sorry i feel its the right forum but thanks for the help

1)Look like a tourny player: loose the camo,
2)Get the right equipment(the Ion's fine)it needs a ramping board,something with psp mode.Get a Halo or empire reloader
3)Work on your gun and playing skills(found in articles all over the internet or in pb magazines
4)Find a field where tourny teams practice, usually on sunday morning, and help ref or hang out, someone will need you sooner or later.
You will find that playing tourny paintball gets very expensive, especially if you play on the national level
Good Luck

^^^ good info...I have a empire reloader, working on getting a barrel setup, and ramping board...And I am aware about the expense...I dont know why but all my hobbies (Hockey, modding cars, photography) are all money pits.
I was hoping to get someone local to northern va to guide me locally.
I always research what I am interested in and that's why I am leaning towards tourney ball is because its a challenge and looks fun as hell. Someone told me I play woodsball like a speedball player and lectured me about how military this and that and go back to speedball...hard to go back to something you never did...

If I were you, just go out to AG one weekend, maybe not even to ball, and hang out by the xball/hyperball fields, and ask the teams(probably the PTS teams would be your best bet) how they started teams, and if they are recruiting..I am also going to be looking for a team in a little bit, if you need to know anything else you can probably just PM me, but I'm off to work now :)
Edit: Hah, didn't realize I still had 20 minutes until I leave.
Anyway, I would go up to the fields, and just play some hyberball there are always teams up there and most of the guys are cool.
My offer still stands if you would like to make a team sometime soon(within the next month or so, was on school leave kind of thing, and now need money :P )

Great, this is what I was looking for, locals...I believe there is a Tourney there this weekend so maybe I will swing by that. I hope to get some time in and maybe be considered once you go to form/join a team. Thanks

Oooh..tourney this weekend?
Bleh, just checked the PTS forums..guess I wont be hyper/airballin' this weekend, walk ons for me! Lol...And yea, it would be a good idea to go scope out the PTS players, and just ask them some basic stuff.

1. Lose the camo get some tourny playing cloths ( as shallow as this sounds believe it or not teams will look down on you more than somone dressed in All dye stuff while your in camo.
2. Practice your basic stuff like
A. Snapshooting
B. Running and Gunning
C. Laying paint *accurately*
D. Sliding diving etc
3. PLAY SOME TOURNAMENTS
Get a couple guys and get a feel of what tourny ball is like even if you lose the first few tourny's experience is experience. Its alot more aggressive and you will learn alot playing just 1 tournament with players that have played a few. It could take you 1 month or 1 year to get alot of these things down but just like hocky, it takes PRACTICE. You need to put your heart into it and set personal goals which you want to achieve by a certain time.
for example
Playing a tournament by a certain date
or Going to an Established team's practice.
That would help you the most is going to team practices with teams that know what they are doing.
They will teach you ALOT and you will learn MUCH faster playing with them. If money is an issue and you cannot play both recball and a team practice then choose the team practice for a couple months then go to a recball game. It will show you how much you have learned and you can mess around with all the stuff you have learned on all the recballers.
After you feel comfortable get into a good tournament ( local 3 man/5 man etc )
Then go to team tryouts whenever you can play your heart out and dont get discouraged if you dont make it..keep trying and eventually you will most likely make a team.
Hope this helped
