Hi, and I was wondering what the paintball is like out there because I will be moving soon. I am from CA and usually play speedball at SC Village. I will be moving to Charlottesville, and I heard there are some paintball courses out there. What type of play is out there, speedball or all woods? How is the speedball courses out there if there is any? Any good tournaments? Thank You!

I actually just moved to Ruckersville, which is about 12 miles north of Charlottesville. So far I have visited three fields:
Splathouse - this is an indoor playing field that is right downtown in Charlottesville. Their walk-on day is every friday, from 7pm-10pm. If you want to play any other day of the week, you have to call to reserve it and you have to have a minimum of 10 people. Since you have just moved, I'm assuming you won't have 9 other friends immediately, so your best bet is just to play on the Friday nights. However, splathouse is pretty expensive in my opinion. I paid $42 for entrance fee ($10) and the 500 rounds of paint and one HPA fill cost me $32. At other fields I can buy 1000 rounds for $30. But anyway, it is an indoor warehouse, with many large rooms and obstacles to hide behind. Since the warehouse has no air conditioning, it was extremely hot and muggy both times i have went. On top of that, they do not clean the floors, so there is a layer of paint on the floors of the warehouse, making it easy to slip on, and messy to kneel/sit/lie on. Wear OLD shoes, because I promise you that your shoes are going to be covered in the slimiest goo after you are done playing! The lighting also sucks. It's hard to see what you are shooting at. Oh ya, and both times I have been, there were probably around 20 people altogether.
Mad Dog Paintball - This is an outdoor field, located in Stanardsville, which is about 9 miles north of ruckersville, so it would probably take you about 30 minutes to get from charlottesville to this field. You have to realize that this field just opened like a month ago, so it is very new, and not many people know about it yet. When I went a few weeks ago, there were only 3 other people there, so I didn't even bother playing. They have a Supair field, although I didn't quite like it because they had the bunkers all too close, and the whole field is on a slanted hillside..... They also have a wooded field, which seemed fairly decent, but rather small (maybe a couple acres). I asked the owner about their paint prices, and they were pretty good (2000 rounds for $60). That slanted hillside really bothers me, and I hope they can get more players to show up next time. Their field is open every saturday and sunday from 10am-6pm, and walk-ons are welcome.
Soggiebottom paintball - This is an outdoor field, located near Culpeper. The store and field are seperate. The store is about 30 miles north of ruckersville, which would make it almost an hour drive for you, since you are in charlottesville. Add another 15 minutes to your trip to get to the actual playing field. I played at this field this past Sunday, it was the first day they had it opened. They just relocated their field to this new location, so all they had up when I went was the Supair field. However, they have a Hyperball field that they are in the process of putting up, I'm not sure when that will be done, but probably soon, maybe in a couple weeks from now. There will also be a woods field, i'm not sure when that will be done though. When I went, there were about 20 people there, and we played a lot of 3 on 3 and 5 on 5's. THeir supair ball field was nicely laid out, and I had a great time when I played there. It was raining that day, which put a nice twist on things (like my paintballs hehe). Their prices were fair, I think i got my 1000 rounds for $31, and the field fee and all day air (co2 or 4500psi fills) was I think like $15. I forget.
There is also a field in Fishersville, which is about 30-40 miles west of Charlottesville. I have NOT been there yet, so I can't comment on this field.
Out of the three fields I have been to, I would have to recommend Soggiebottom paintball. It is more than an hours drive from where you live, but if you play all day like I do, then the drive really isn't all that bad. Their store isn't all too bad either. If they don't have something that you want, then they will order for you. I believe they also do anodizing....
Anyway, if you need to know more or have more questions, email me at chassc22@erau.edu or you can message me on AIM, my AIM name is JoeAE2005

Hey, Welcome to VA.:D
All I have to say is go to Skyline Paintball. It's in Strasburg VA. It's the greatest place on earth, if your into paintball that is. The owners Chris and Sue are the greatest people in the world. Their prices are fair, and their fields are better than anyone can ask for (they are frequently updated). If you play walk-on, I've reffed when there where 75 people there on a Saturday for walkon (Hard work for a ref). They are open Saturday and Sunday for walkon play. If your an experienced speedball player, let them know they'll let you play it. They have a 5 man Ultimate airball field, which is changed all the time. If your a tournament player, they have tons of tournaments with large turnouts, like 12-15 teams usually. They also offer great prizes, or cash payments for placing. All tournament games are played on the airball field. Also if your used to being on a team, lots of teams need an extra player all the time, someone that is committed, so just show up and start asking ?'s and you can usually get placed on a team. They work with tournament players really well. Like right now they are trying to get teams good practice for the IAO so they are changing the airball field every weekend, this way you have lots of good practice for different field setups. Anyway Skyline is great and no matter how far you are from it, you should go. I believe you are like 1.5-2 hours South of it, if your in C-ville. Great Fields, Great People, Great Prices, what more could you ask for.

Hey Triple-C -
Well while I have not played at Skyline some of my customers do. I havent really heard any bad things about them, most seam happy. Only real problem for you is your looking at 2.5+ hr drive to thier fields. Looking at a map of western va look at were US RT 66 and US RT 81 intersect, that's a general area.
If you dont mind driving there are tons of fields north of you and Pev's is adding a huge hyperball/Sup Air section to AG Paintball games, thats going to be a 2 hr drive for you.
Given that your use to SC Village I am guessing 1.5hr drives dont bother you much :)
Good luck, swing by my shop in fairfax sometime and say hi.

Well, the long drives don't bother me at all, the fact that the field is there is all that matters. Actually I live only 40 minutes from SC Village so its not that bad of a drive. I love it over there in VA, so I can't wait. What bums me out though is all my local fields just got sup-air and I am about to leave. I'll make sure to stop by your shop when I get the chance, thanks for the reply-

Not to knock Skyline but I don't really think that is what he is looking for. The setup there is great and it is like a 1/4 mile from the interstate. And yes they have a speedball field there but they got alot more wooded fields. My oppinion is that if you go to Skyline you need to be on the wooded fields because there some of the best I have seen in my travels. If you want speedball then Pevs is going to be the place for NoVA just due to the shear number of players and teams that play off of there hyperball fields. But being in Charlottesville I would start looking towards Richmond before I would look at anything in NoVA. I would also suggest that you try a little woodball if you never have. Granted there are no tournament games but it will help keep you from getting burned out on speedball.
Oh one more thing, Skyline needs to do more scenario games. this last one was great and the field can handle alot more than what was there. I would say in a couple years if not sooner they could be a major field for scenario on the eastcoast.

I'll be going to skyline for the first time, next Saturday, August 17th.
Oh ya, and since my last reply under this post, I have also been to that paintball place in Fishersville (called Paintball Plus). There were only 4 other people there when I went. The speedball course wasn't that good. It consisted of walls lined up in rows down the field, which really isn't good for speedball.
I've also been to BCBG. There were roughly 12 or so players when I went (on a Sunday). THey have two fields, a small wooded field with a few bunkers, and a Hyperball field. I didn't particularly care much for their wooded field, as it consisted of many skinny trees. But their hyperball field was great! They have a website, but don't count on getting the paint as cheap as it is stated on their website.

West Coast huh? SC Village is the shiz, I wanna' go there next season for the LA Event. Anyways, Pevs' @ AG will be the place 2 be in a matter of time, and has the potential to be the East Coast SC Village... Knowing Pev, he'll squeeze every bit out of it and it will reach it's MAX potential and you can bet it will change the tourny scene so that there will someday be an even amount of Pro teams from West coast as East coast  (ohpleaseohpleaseohplease)
AG alone was the king of walk ons, the SC Village of Walk ons. it had so many fields that some weren't playable during the summer bceause the brush was so thick you coudn't get 2 them.
Pev's has always been good with tournys, big games, etc. But simply outgrew it's tiny 28 (or so) acre plot of land with the opening of new stores. Pev's field simply couldn't support both birthday groups and tournys at the same time. the field couldn't even support a big game.
With AG's land potential, and Pev's hyperball and airball expertice (sp?) Pev's @ AG will definantly put any SC Villager, or EMRer at home with speedball or woods fields.....

Well I'm finally here, and I would like to thank everyone for their help!
I'm hoping to find some tourny players here in VA. Here in Keswick, this does not exist!

i just figured out that keswick is like 5 miles from my apartment . . . go figure.
anyway, the closest store is Valley Surplus (i think that's the name) and if you like Rudy Customs, that's a good place to get them.
take 250 west, turn Right onto Hydraulic Road,
go about a mile -> turn right onto 29,
go about 3 miles -> turn left onto Rio Road,
take an immediate Right. the shop is behind the pizza place on that corner (and close to Crutchfield :-D)
((( don't quote me on the mileage, i don't go up there often enough, so i might be way off )))
the guy that runs the register in there seems to be a nice enough guy, although i've only met him a few times. last time i talked to him i think they where doing 10 man stuff, but it's been almost 2 months since i've been in there . . .

Almost everyone that goes, or has gone to Skyline are glad they did. It is an awesome place to play. Our team travels 1 1/2 hours to get there every other weekend. We pass other fields and stores, for a reason, nice place and nice people and a great price.
If you are interested in tourney ball get back with me, we are always in need of a player. We have exactly 5 peeps and if someone doesn't go we have trouble. We travel around quite a bit and hit a lot of the major tourneys on the east coast.
